Its almost Christmas~

What's good family and friends!?

i hope you have all had an excellent week, looking forward to another solid one in each of your endeavors! This week was a super rewarding one in this area and I don't have any questions to organize my thoughts, so here goes nothing!

First thing is first, the Christmas Initiative. How is everybody doing posting that video to their wall? as of yesterday, the church has paid to be the only advertiser on youtube through christmas, and also to have pictures posted in time square and throughout the internet. It's clear to me the importance of this time of year to reach out to those who have yet to discover or embrace the gift of a Savior. the church is putting a ton of money and a ton of focus/effort into spreading that simple video, and the concept that Christ is the center of this holiday. I've been thinking a lot this week about the three principles on the back of the pass along cards. Discover the gift, Embrace the gift, and Share the gift. Each of us- everybody that lives and breaths- is at a point where they need to do one of the three. I think many members of the church have briefly discovered our Savior. a think a fewer number have embraced the message entirely, and i think without those two it makes it very difficult to share this gift. My testimony has been strengthened as we've discussed the initiative with our ward family at dinner appointments and our christmas party- In order to share the gospel or to share the gift of our Savior, we need to be fully converted to the gospel. we need to Discover what it means TO US, not just in general, that God gave his son. Again thinking about Abraham and the symbolism in the commandment to sacrifice isaac. I just know it's so important for us to gain an understand that the gift is for us. In discovering this gift we open the door to a lot of sacrifice on our part, and a lot of changes in the way we live our lives. I think embracing the gift entails gaining a spiritual witness that Prayers are heard, that the message we come to understand is absolutely true. that our actions speak volumes in terms of our commitment to the Gospel and we can't fully embrace the message without being willing to make it the center of our lives. Recognizing that it's not a controlling way of life, but that it's liberating. understanding that We have commandments and standards and values that if followed, will enable us to find greater joy than any earthly endeavor can bring to us. to do the last part effectively i think the first two parts have to be stable. If we are committed to the gospel, we learn of the Savior and we strive to be like him, Sharing this gift will be second nature. Since none of us are perfect, sharing the gift might be a little more difficult. I just think about all that has been given to me through the Gospel ( everything i cherish in this life, especially family and friends ) and my gratitude pushes me to reach out to more people. "Because i have been given much, i too must give " i know that there's a special spirit associated with this time of year and as we reach out to the people that have yet to discover or embrace this gift, we'll find much success not in the amount of people that are baptized because we tried, but in the spirit we are blessed with in this special time of year. I'm so grateful for it. and i'm just about out of time!

as for the work in Fallon, it goes well! it turns out i'm staying in the same ward which is a huge answer to prayer! after 9 months i'm no longer a zone leader any more, which is another answer to prayer!! i'll have a district of 8 missionaries, and it's crunch time for me! there's so much work to do and i'm just so excited to put my shoulder to the wheel and give it all i've got in the coming months.

i love you all! just as with our ward family, i invite all of you to join with us in Sharing this gift we've been given in the coming weeks. I'd also invite everybody to consider how we too can more fully discover and embrace this gift that has been given us. I know with my whole entire heart that the message is true and that our Savior loves us. let us all do our part to show our love for him be spreading it to all this week. until next time family and friends!

Slow mo movie from Joe!

its Fall- y'all

Hey fam and friends!
Another week here in the oasis of NV. everyone should google Fallon if you haven't before.. this place is the best/worst. the desert oasis..
hey but life as a missionary here is pretty good! i'll tell ya the Lord is teaching us a lot here, sometimes i feel like the information is coming from a fire hose and i'm a red solo cup trying to contain it all. i'm grateful the Lord is patient with me! anywayzzz, let's get to some questions .

DO ANY YM GO ON SPLITS WITH YOU?
not on a regular basis- i'm sure they would if we invited them. we have a recently returned missionary that works with us a lot- he has a car...and we don't. :) and he's an awesome kid!

HOW MANY WARDS ARE YOU INVOLVED/WORK IN?
just one ward. it's so small. fallon 4th ward- it's about 4 miles by 5 miles, very rural in places, we have one neighborhood, no apt's - just comfy country homes. it's the nicest part of fallon but it's so hard to find people to teach!

ARE YOU RIDING BIKES STILL?
yes! my bike got thrashed in a neat accident last week. the stoooz went over the handlebars of my bike and under the wheels of my companions. we've been walking a lot since then and planning better and getting rides. hahah.

DO YOU STILL HAVE A CAMERA?
i sure do! i've got some pics to send home today.

WHERE DO YOU GO TO ANSWER EMAIL ?
The family history center or the city library . now we are at the family history center because the city library is closed for remodeling.

DO YOU PREFER EMAILS OR SNAIL MAIL?
i prefer to hear from people. snail mail is more fun but i'd rather get emails from people than have them say they don't have time to sit down and write. emails take literally no time.. the whole "i don't have time" excuse is invalid. but i know it's hard! so yep.

WHAT IS THE BEST THING THAT HAPPENED THIS WEEK?
hmm i think the best thing that happened this week was MLC meeting. We discussed the needs of the mission and what our role is to help ourselves and other missionaries get there. all about pushing and giving a little more tomorrow than we did today- i've been thinking a lot about that principle. There's a quote from i believe spencer W kimball that identifies "good" members from "durable disciples" - good members live a life that is comfortable in the gospel. they live the standards mostly when convenient and do good things. a disciple strives everyday to be more like the savior. the difference is in where the effort is exerted. I've got so much to work on, and so much to relay to the zone this week. it was just a great reminder and motivator for me to not get complacent at all in a time of my mission when that is very easy to do.

WHAT DID YOU DO FOR HALLOWEEN?
we went to MLC and then came home and weekly planned. i forgot it was even halloween.

WHO IS S BETTER COOK? You or your Comp?
i definitely cook more often then my companion.. i've never tried anythin he has made so i can't say for sure.

WHEN ARE TRANSFERS ?
last week! i've got 5 more weeks at least here in fallon .

HOW DID YOU SEE THE HAND OF GOD WORK IN YOUR LIFE THIS WEEK?
It was easy to see and feel the chastening of the Lord this week. In a recent email home i emphasized that to each of my areas there has been kind of a missionary lesson learned.. some method of finding that the Lord helped me to gain a testimony of- some element of the work that i needed to more fully understand etc. but i quantified it.. i said that i felt like the Lord was going to teach me how to work with members in this area. it was like that was my expectation- foolish of me! he will teach me how to work with members in this area, but it became apparent to me that he's got much more for me to learn here. me saying i was going to learn that one thing was limiting the power of the Lord in my life to help me learn and change to the extend that he wants me too. Like i've said a few times, i've got so much to learn. I'm grateful that the Lord has given me this excellent opportunity and so grateful for his hand in helping me to understand ( or at least scratch the surface ) of things like this.

WHAT DO YOU NEED FROM US THIS WEEK?
I'd love some photos! what are you people up too lately!?
well my friends and fam. I hope everybody has a great week this week. I'm so grateful for all of you. your love and support is felt! My testimony is strengthened every time i think about it- The Lord has blessed me with the best family and friends ever . i love you all! talk to you very soon.

A Baptism!

Hello family and friends!

so transfer calls are in once again ( holy cow.. where is the time going!? )
i'm staying in cold springs NV for at least another 6 weeks! i'm way excited too because we've been working hard and have seen the Lord's hand guiding us to people that are ready for the message. Unfortunately my companion and homie for life Elder Padilla is being transferred! he's going to fernley NV to be zone leader over the Fallon zone. he's going to go on exchanges in the ward i served in for 6 months.. the roots of my mission! i'm stoked for him, it's a great place- but i'm super bummed they are splitting us up. we even asked the boss ( President Hermansen ) if he could reconsider the transfer, just because we have a ton of momentum going now. we've been working super hard and have seen the hard work pay off. crossing paths with the people that have been prepared and watching them progress. There are a lot of people that are getting close to baptism here and we're just excited for what is to come. The missionary that's being trasnferred to cold springs to be my companion is Elder Bertagnole- he's been Ohwyhee NV his whole mission serving on an indian reservation in normal clothes. it may be a different ball game that what he's used to but we'll try and get him squared away quick!
Last saturday there was a baptism in the YSA 2nd ward- the ward that i just got trasnferred from. her name is laura, she's the one that i wrote about a while back. she was so prepared and we were completely led by our father in heaven to cross paths with her at the perfect time. Elder Koster and I were contacting less active people on our ward list and cleaning up the roster and we both felt impressed to see a former investigator that neither of us had ever met. just a guy that we saw on our former list in the area book. we stopped by his house to find out that he wasn't there and that it would be hard to catch him. the person who answered the door..? Laura! She lived in a different house about 15 miles north of there, and she came to visit her little sister kind of on a whim. just felt like she needed too. at the time she didn't know why and of course we didn't know why or what was to come of our visit, but it was no coincidence that we crossed paths at the perfect time. In hindsight it's so apparent that the Lord prompted everybody involved to be where we were so that he could accomplish is work! I know that he guides us on a daily basis and i'm grateful for that. Laura's baptism was such a cool experience. it was the first time in my mission that i was there when we found her and i was able to see her get baptized. the whole process from start to finish. so cool! her boyfriend is a recont convert/ shortly thereafter went IA and is now reactivated through all of that. she didn't even know he was a member until she started taking the lessons from us. best thing ever! that was for sure the highlight of the week.
i feel aimless without questions everybody. here's my address for the next six weeks at least- 7350 Silver Lake Rd. aprt 2E Reno NV 89401. write soon! i hope everybody has a great week, i'll talk to you all soon.

May Letter....

Hello Family and friends!

This was a long week!  A lot of good and a few challenges. First of all, this isn't the YSA ward! sacrament meeting yesterday was so dang loud! i'll forever miss the reverence of the YSA Ward. the work here is much different as well. it's residential areas.. much more .... old! It's a good thing though- I have some growing up to do so being around all these fogies will propel my aging. haha let's get to the questions this week!

WHAT IS YOUR NEW ADDRESS?
so 3640 Hummingbird Dr Reno NV is the address i'll be moving into in two weeks. right now i'm in a 1 bedroom apartment with my companion and another set of missionaries who cover the same ward as us ( the ward is split!) it's a complete riot all the time- enjoying it while it lasts but definitely looking forward to some privacy in a couple weeks! as for sending stuff- the mission office will suffice because i don't know the address of the apt we are staying in and we have to go to the office once a week anyway to pick up supplies!

WHO IS THIS NEW COMP?
Elder Padilla! he's my homie for life!!! we got our mission calls on the same day back in UT- somebody linked us up on facebook and we talked on there before the mission. he's been out a transfer less than i have but he's a super obedient missionary and he's so fun. I'm learning spanish from him and we are just working hard and becoming better friends every day! couldn't be more excited about serving with him- first time i've felt equally yoked in a companionship whilst maintaining a great friendship. every day is a goo day!

DID YOUR ZL DUTIES CHANGE? IF SO HOW?
Duties stayed the same, the zone just grew a ton! E. Padilla's zone and my old zone just became one zone. he's been a ZL for 2 transfers and i've only been for 1 transfer so we're pretty new, but we both served with excellent missionaries before this so we're putting what we've learned together and just doing everything we can to help.

WHAT SCRIPTURES GOT YOU EXCITED THIS WEEK?
DC 123: 17 - It's one that is quoted quite a bit but it has stuck out to me this week. As a missionary we have so many resources to help us be more effective. I was preparing a talk for zone conference ( tomorrow) and the topic assigned was using PMG dvd's to accomplish our purpose- and the idea that so strongly stuck out to me was just using the resources we've been given- every one of them, being completely diligent- is what the Lord expects of his servants and that scripture really motivates me to cheerfully do everything i can- that means everything!

HOW DID YOU APPLY THE HEALING OF CHRISTS ATONEMENT THIS WEEK?
We had an interesting experience this week and i think it applies well. We had a missionary in our zone call us and tell us he's done with the mission. he felt like he shouldn't be out here because of inadequecis ( ? spelled that wrong ) and other short comings. adversarial forces really get this kid down and whether he is mentally capable of controlling them or not, he wasn't recognizing that those thoughts were coming from the adversary. We had him come to our apartment so we could chat with him before he packed up. In our conversation the topic that the spirit kept bringing us back to was the origin of those negative thoughts. we emphasized it many times but the negativity seemed to persist and inhibit his ability to feel the spirit. We committed him to recognize where the negativity comes from and ask heavenly father to give him the proper perspective. We talked about how a diligent effort makes all the difference in the word- if this is the avenue by which he can overcome the hardships than the adversary is going to instill even more negativity in his mind to try and deter him from seeking heavens help. we talked about this and at first didn't seem like we were gaining any ground. He hesitantly accepted our invitation to consider where those thoughts come from, and to ask for help. we followed up with him the following days and his demeanor and attitude has done a 180. not to say things couldn't change or that we played a part in changing him- 100% the Lord working through us ( He calls men in their weakness but QUALIFIES them for the work ) This missionary has experienced extreme ebbs and flows his whole mission and we aren't sure he has the stability to stick around- But t through the experience trying to help that missionary, The Lord taught me a valuable lesson. Positive thoughts come from God and negative thoughts come from the adversary. Since the time of our conversation I have had strong impressions and guidance, allowing me to recognize the fiery darts ( if you will) and have the strength to overcome them myself. it takes that awareneness- Understanding where these thoughts and impressions come from- to recognize them when they occur and do what the Lord expects us to do with the knowledge we've been given, and that's simply to make the right choices! I'm not sure what will happen with that missionary- He seems to be doing much better- but that lesson won't be lost on me.

 WHO DID YOU TEACH?
We taught a grip of people this week but i'll tell you real quick about Mike. he's 26 and actually should have been taught by the ysa elders ( my last ward ) but the missionaries up here didn't pass him off. the first lesson i was with them for we talked about the ysa ward and invited him to check it out. He was going to get baptized on june 21st but we felt he was ready now. We talked to him again about the importance of baptism and we talked about the influence of the holy ghost helping us on our journey here. We invited him to pray about being baptized this coming saturday instead! he ended up accepting the invitation so he'll be getting baptized in our ward on saturday, confirmed on sunday, then we are going to take him to the ysa ward to see how he likes it. super good guy and i'm glad i got to meet him before he got dunked! :)

HOW IS THE NEW MISSION LEADER?
Such a good guy! we have to email almost 20 miles from our house so instead of using proselyting miles he just drives us around all pday. he's retired and just sees the vision of the work hastening. I'm super excited to work with him!

HOW BIG IS YOUR WARD?
pretty big in terms of membership. we have 150+ inactive members and effecting last tuesday ( when i got here) they split the area. there are now two companioships covering the same ward. they are in a walking area and it's far too small, and we have a huge area and it's too big. the dynamic is a bit of a challenge and we're going to talk to our mission president tomrrow about reaaranging the boundaries. but it's a good ward! just so different!

ARE YOU INVOLVED WITH MORE THAN ONE WARD?
nope- just the cold springs ward!

DID YOU HAVE ANYTHING REALLY CRAZY HAPPEN THIS TRANSFER?
I'm out of time this week but remind me to answer this question- We had something so crazy happen with a guy we talked to on the street last transfer. ask again and i'll answer it when i have more time! :)
Welp good people. This was a long one, hopefully you don't all fall asleep while reading! I'm so grateful for the love and support you all show me and i hope and pray things are going well for all of you! We have to get going- The other elders are going suit shopping! H&M here we come. Love you all! have the best week.

What's up guys!?
so this week was a crazy one for us here in the biggest little city! mostly for me. First of all, I'm serving in the same exact area that i started my mission in. I'm in the same house (1765 Carlin St Reno NV 89503 ..Write me friends) , i'm in the same ward, I'm sleeping in the same bed for crying out loud! the only difference this go around is my companion and my new assignment. So my trainer (who had a year left in his mission when i was sent here) went home last week. I can't believe it! the time just goes and goes. If you don't stay focused as a missionary the time just slips through your fingers .I've experienced it!  so there's a lot to talk about this week, let's get to it! no questions jus me and the keyboard... lame haha

So! first thing is first. hello!!!? same area!? it is so crazy. it truly feels like i've been here my whole mission, which is why i think this week went by super slow. But! the work in this area has tripled since i was here last. the mission in general has just "sharpened the axe" if you will. Everything is more efficient and more polished. Last year at this time we found 1 new investigator in the whole transfer. We taught 6 lessons a week on average. this week we taught 21 lessons and found 4 new investigators. You don't realize progress made until you look at where you came from compared to where you are now. I'm not a numbers guy.. i actually don't like referring to people (lessons, baptisms etc.) as numbers. But if the motive for being a missionary is to share the joy and love the gospel gives us than using numbers to measure can be a useful resource( for lack of a better term) We go out by campus and we talk to everybody that we cross on the street. In a singles ward we've got 2 real ways to find people. Referalls from members (usually recent converts are the most enthused) and talking with everybody. Our ward isn't focused on missionary work at all so we just have to do everything we can to invite people to listen. It's super hard work but it's also very rewarding when we come in contact with people that right away we recognize the impact the gospel will have on them. Scattered Israel! So the 4 new people last week all came from street contacting or talking with everyone. my new companion is super good at it, which i'm grateful for because it's not easy and with his help i have and will continue to learn a lot more. So that's the area. Reno YSA 2nd ward. So fun! i've seen only a handful of people i knew from last year.. but it has been warm welcomes from those people. It's different enough to not feel too repetitive, and the work is on the up and up. i'm grateful the Lord has trusted me to serve in this area again and i'm going to do anything i can to help the peeps here. sleep will come easy this transfer!

Movin on ! well this is already kinda long. let's talk about Gen con! i don't know if it's just because i'm a missionary and i pay closer attention.. but i feel like general conference has become more powerful with every session! this conference had a huge impact on me and there were countless times when i felt like the Lord was reaching out to me individually, attempting to soften my heart and help me to become more like the Savior. I believe that is the case for everybody who exercises faith and listens! I'll just elaborate on two of the address' that stuck out to me, as i'm sure they are ones that stuck out to the rest of y'all as well! first one- The talk on gratitude by Elder Uchtdorf. Unreal!!! i loved every minute of it. excuse me for slaughtering the quote.. " we should be grateful, not for our trials.. but IN our trials." what does that even mean!? it really opened my eyes once again to what it means to be grateful. it helped me to understand the principle of gratitude looking beyond the present time. Being grateful in your trails as he talked about, refers to looking forward with an eye of faith to what the Lord has in store for us after the storm calms. not just being stoked that a loved one just passed away. not being grateful that you got laid off from your job.. but keeping in mind the Lord's blessings. Paying attention to what he has done for us in our lives. not only the blessings that we have, but the blessings that we will receive. I've shared my testimony on the principle of being grateful for trials because they promote an opportunity to grow and learn- and i think this is an important concept to grasp. The Savior experienced our pains and sorrows as part of the Atonement. Trials help us to rely on him and to develop a stronger relationship with Him. truly a blessing for us! unfortunately it takes humbling experiences for us to turn to God sometimes. Trials are a blessing to us because they force us ( sort of ) to rely on God, in turn strengthening and deepening our knowledge that he is there and he loves us. If this concept is understood than we could look at trials as a means by which God helps us build a desire to Communicate with him. such a good talk! there's so much more too it and i'm looking forward to studying it when we get the ensign next month. Also, (sorry this is so long!! ) the talk by President Monson on Love. My testimony is that the gospel is a gospel and a message of Love. The only reason we have the gospel and are encouraged to live the principles is because God loves us and wants us to be happy in this life and in the life to come. I know that He loves us and is mindful of us. Such a blessing!

gosh sorry guys. didn't meant to get all intense.. but i loved conference and those address' have been on my mind.

So, i'm in the same area, the work is super exciting, and conference was awesome. I think that's all i've got this week. write me soon and let me know how yall are doing! the address is above and my email is joseph.sykes@myldsmail.net Love you all and i hope you guys have a super good week! until next time.

the transfer call came in!

Hello Family and friends!! transfer calls are in, i'm headed back to reno! I'm going to be serving in the very same ward that i was trained in! crazy crazy! the Lord has more work for me and my new companion to do there and I'm greatly looking forward to it! I'm super bummed to be leaving this area, it has been an incredible learning experience and i've loved the ward and the people we've been teaching. Duty calls and I have sure faith that the Lord is sending me where i'm needed. My responsibility is to seek the guidance and counsel, and reach the people that will receive us. I'm excited as can be! let's get to the questions! i've got some packing to do... ( oh shoot)

WHAT WAS THE BEST THING THAT HAPPENED THIS WEEK?
Well, i told you all the story about the corpse, right? well guys, this is the funniest/craziest thing. We went back to see our investigator robert a week to the day later to provide comfort and whatever. He was emotional when we got there and he informed us the crematory just took his mom away. He let her dead body sit in his house for a week!!!! are you kidding me!?!?! ugh.. i was so incredibly grateful we showed up after the people had taken her away. I don't mean to be insensitive.. I can only imagine the mourning that would take place without a testimony of the gospel and the plan that God has for us- But from an outsiders perspective you have to laugh at how weird that it. also during our visit he was planting " medicine flowers" in fake soil made of coconut fiber. he was pouring a bunch of chemicals on the plants and telling us how many benefits they have. interesting visit- and this was the day that i was saying goodbye to him. Solid memory of that guy! one of the best visits so far.

WHERE WILL YOU GET TO WATCH GENERAL CONFERENCE?
I was in the same area last april conference and i believe we'll be in the stake center on kings row Rd. I guess we'll see when i get to the new area!

WHO HAVE YOU BEEN TEACHING?
Lots of peeps! I don't know if you want a list of names or what- but we have a couple investigators who are very likely candidates for baptism soon. We met a guy named chris, can't remember if i told you guys about him. He's 25 and just moved here with his wife and 5 month old baby from sacramento. He said he has quite a track record and moved to get away from some of the bad things he was into. we asked him what he expected from meeting with the missionaries and he said he wants Christ to make him whole. Strait golden! he's so cool. oh and we tracted into him! we also met a lady named Heather (tracting) that had nothing but good things to say about the "mormons." Her daughters best friend is LDS and heather said she wants to know what it is that makes the mormons so good. this is like, PMG the District dvds happening in the flesh! it also just so happens that it's all going to unfold after i leave the area. that bites, but i wouldn't change a thing. :)

WHO WOULD YOU LIKE US TO PRAY FOR?
Pray for chris and heather, and for the Pinion hills Elders ( my old comp and his new comp) . This is an awesome area and I hope they continue to teach and find people that are ready for the message.

WHAT CLOTHING OF YOURS NEED TO BE REPLACED? (ANY HOLES IN YOUR SOCKS?)
My socks are solid! i got loads for christmas and i love all of them. I'm actually doing very well in terms of clothing. I'm going to be sending some home today so i can fit all of my stuff in the suitacases i have!

DID YOU GET TRANSFERRED?
..yep

WHAT SMALL ACT OF KINDNESS DID YOU DO THIS WEEK?
haha I keep track when i do something nice for people.. i keep a tally to see how awesome i am. no!! this is a funny question haha.. can't really keep track of little deeds that are nice.  but since it applies- Today when i was walking into the library i was the last of 4 missionaries, and behind us was a single file line like 5 miles long of people coming into the library. i held the door until everybody came in. Old people were like " are you going to stand there all day...?" and " are you getting paid to do this..? " haha. It wasn't that i wanted to hold the door for everyone.. i just couldn't hold it for one old lady and let it close on another.. ;) kidding.. but it was good timing and how hard is it to hold a door for someone? like you just stand there with a smile on your face. anyway. I'm sure that's the only nice thing i've done this week. hahah

WHAT DO YOU THINK OF DON AND STEPH NOT WAITING FOR YOU TO COME HOME?
I love Don and Steph! I'm so stoked they are getting hitched. i just hate that i haven't heard from them since they've made the decision.. what the heck? so uncool! if i don't hear from you between now and march 2015 than congratulations on the wedding and hopefully we're still related when i get home!

WHAT SCRIPTURE JUMPED OUT AT YOU AND WHY?
District meeting this week was on Patience and diligence- alma 32:41 i believe it is.. comparing faith to a seed. I am pretty sure last week i was thinking about patience too.. it's so applicable! when we plant a seed we have to be diligent in nurturing it and patient in plucking the fruit- so it is with any principle of the Gospel. Feeling God's love is the most precious above all other fruit- sometimes we have to be diligent and patient to bear the fruit. It made a lot of sense to me and the district meeting went super well.

WHAT DO YOU KNOW FOR SURE?
I know that the Lord calls us in our weakness, but he qualifies us for the work. I think it's also related, we will never face any trial we can't bear. I have a testimony that through the power of the Atonement, all things are possible. The Savior knows what it feels like to be where we are, right now. It takes asking for help and guidance to develop a testimony that he knows us. I know he knows us and will guide us to being truly happy!
that's all for this week my friends. I hope it's a good one for all! Love you, enjoy conference and we'll talk real soon!
